The towns of Forestport and Steuben have qualified for state assessment awards, according to the New York State Office of Real Property Services.
Both towns won the 2007 Excellence in Equity Award by conducting a reassessment that met state standards for equitable assessments, the office said in a news release.
State law requires all properties in a municipality to be assessed fairly based on market value, or a uniform percentage of market value, according to the office. By adjusting assessments to reflect market value, Steuben and Forestport took steps to ensure property owners do not pay more or less than their fair share of taxes, according to the office.
Steuben and Forestport also may be eligible to apply for the State Aid for Quality Assessing program, which grants up to $5 per parcel in aid, the office said.
