UTICA - No cause has been determined in the West Street fire that left eight people homeless Saturday, but the fire is not being treated as suspicious, Utica Fire Chief Russell Brooks said today.
The blaze affected two apartments at 1618 West St., originating in the first-floor unit. Severe smoke and fire damage were reported on the first floor, and moderate smoke damage was reported in the second-floor unit.
Two families were left homeless. Seven people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and later released.
Investigators are on the scene this afternoon and should know the cause by later today or tomorrow, Brooks said.
