CLINTON, N.Y. – The Herkimer College Generals waited out the weather and moved their Region III-A semifinal to an alternate site before breezing into the championship round with a 22-3 rout of Monroe Community College Wednesday.

Scheduled as a Tuesday home game, the Generals postponed the contest and played it at Hamilton College. They showed up ready to play and put up nine runs in each of the first two innings on the way to a win in five under the NJCAA mercy rule.

Four pitchers took turns in the circle and the combined for nine strikeouts and two walks while holding the Tribunes to three hits. Starter Kali Puppolo fanned four batters in the first two innings, Taylor Betz and Ciel Iida, credited as the winning pitcher, each threw one hitless inning, and Hunter Van Aernum pitched the fifth.

Briana Hoskins doubled, tripled and homered in three trips to the plate, scored each time and drove in five runs for Herkimer (43-6) which heads to Corning Friday to play the first two games of a best-of-three series against Genesee Community College (15-18), a 7-3 semifinal winner Tuesday at Erie Community College. The first game is scheduled for a noon start following the first Region III-B game between Onondaga Community College and Corning Community College, the final’ host.

The Generals, ranked third in the nation, had 21 hits Wednesday with Hoskins delivering three of eight that went for extra bases and one of three Herkimer home runs. Vani Patel also homered and went three-for-four with four runs batted in while Natasha Holt homered, doubled, drove in five runs and scored three times. Leadoff hitter Taylor Zaino had two hits, two walks and four runs scored, Brooke Snyder had two hits and scored two runs, Jessica Johnston scored two runs, and Jennah Hogan had had two hits.

If necessary, deciding games for both series will be played in Corning Saturday at times to be determined. Region III will send two teams to the Division III national tournament.

The eight-team double-elimination national championship tournament will be played May 23-25 at the McQuillan Softball Complex in Rochester, Minnesota.

Herkimer has advanced to seven consecutive national tournaments and won the 2013 title. The Generals’ men’s basketball team won a national championship in Rochester in March.
