ILION, N.Y. – The Central Valley Academy Thunder had four individual champions crowned Saturday and edged Indian River to extend their title streak at the Leo J. Sammon Memorial Tournament.
Central Valley Academy finished with 239 points to Indian River’s 225 ½ and a Thunder championship streak that started when Mohawk and Ilion merged for the 2013-14 school year was extended to six in a row at a tournament that was contested at the former Ilion High School for the 44th.
Indian River was the 2013 champion when Ilion finished third and Mohawk sixth in the last year before merging. The Warriors were runners-up behind Central Valley Academy in 2014 and finished fourth last year when they returned to the tournament after a three-year hiatus.
Camden was Saturday’s third-place team with 191 ½ points. Mexico and Lowville Academy rounded out the top-five in an 11-team field. Locally, Little Falls finished 10th and Poland was 11th.
Central Valley Academy sent a total of seven wrestlers to the finals – Camden had five finalists, Indian River had four, and each had three champions – and watched Sixx Cook, Kace Cook, Trevor Grogan and Hunter Shaut, the most outstanding wrestler for the upper weights, win individual titles. Mason Bush, Marek Bush and Dawson Mower were runners-up for the Thunder.
The Cooks claim championships at the lowest weights. Eighth-grader Sixx Cook was a 9-2 winner against Amsterdam Ram Carlos Montalvo at 99 pounds, and freshman Kace Cook beat New Hartford’s Casey Caruso 10-8 in overtime at 106.
The Thunder had finalists at the six lightest weights and Grogan earned his title at 132 pounds by pinning Kenneth Melton of Indian River 44 seconds into the third period.
Shaut, a senior captain competing at 145, also recorded a pin in his championship match against Amsterdam’s Nick Rodecker. He raised his career win total to 223 and has now won six varsity tournament titles in addition to two Class B and one Division II titles in Section III and a 138-pound state championship in 2017.
Mower and the Bushes lost decisions in consecutive matches. Mason Bush was beaten 4-0 by Micah Roes, the lightweight’s most outstanding wrestler from Lowville Academy, at 113 pounds. Indian River’s Alex Booth defeated Mower 11-5, and teammate Logan Patterson held a 7-0 lead when he hurt his arm in the third period against Marek Bush in a showdown between returning sectional champions.
Anderson Klosner had a third-place finish for Central Valley Academy at 138 pounds while Malachi Farr was fourth at 285, Kye Cook, Michael Dihrberg and Jacob Lawrence took fifth at 138, 160 and 182.
Little Falls senior Lorenzo Scarano was a 138-pound finalist and was beaten 4-1 by Mexico’s Dean Shambo. Mounties Anthony Servidone and Javion Marconi were third-place finishers at 160 and 185 pounds, respectively.
Shayne Stein placed sixth at 145 pounds for Poland.
Camden, Lowvlle Academy and Holland Patent each entered a head-to-head pair in the finals. Camden’s John Vera defeated teammate Colby Johnson 8-3 at 160 pounds. Isaac Lyndaker pinned Andrew Beyer in an all-Lowville 170-pound final. Bryce Dare pinned Hunter Tarbania in a meeting of Holland Patent’s only finalists at 220.
Other champions included Camden’s Josh Mayden and John Mitchell at 152 and 182 pounds, respectively, Indian River’s Kyle Martin at 195, and New Hartford’s Austin Bullock at 285.
