HERKIMER, N.Y. – The West Canada Valley Indians broke away from a halftime tie and defeated Herkimer’s Magicians 47-36 on the road Friday.

Herkimer scored six straight points in the final minute of the second quarter and tied the game at 22 when Marion Leskovar stepped to the line and hit two free throws as a sub for Alana Ferri who hit the wall after she was fouled attempting a layup on the break. Karlie Helmer hit a jumper to start the Herkimer run and Ferri added a layup.

Ferri returned to the floor to start the second half but West Canada Valley went on a 12-0 run to take control of the game. Ferri made one of a pair of foul shots and added a basket before West Canada Valley closed out the third quarter with a 36-25 lead.

Ferri and West Canada Valley’s Jordyn Conte led their teams with 18 points. Ferri had eight steals for Herkimer (5-6, 1-3 CSC-II). Conte grabbed nine rebounds for West Canada Valley.

Marta Joslin and Caity Szczesniak each added 10 points for the Indians, and Szczesniak had a double-double with 13 rebounds. Caroline Tobin added nine rebounds and six steals.

Helmer scored seven points for Herkimer (5-6, 1-3 CSC-II), and Marusic led the team with six rebounds.

The win was the third in row for West Canada Valley (5-5, 2-2 CSC-II) which is now .500 overall and in Center State Conference Division II play with a non-league game at home coming up Monday against Oriskany.

Herkimer plays at home again Monday against Sherburne-Earlville.
