HERKIMER, N.Y. – Central Valley Academy started strong Saturday but Utica’s Notre Dame Jugglers finished stronger and defeated the Thunder 56-48 at Herkimer College.

Playing the last of four games at the Utica Girls Basketball Officials Cancer Challenge, the Thunder scored 21 points in the second quarter and led 33-24 at halftime. The Jugglers then took the lead by outscoring Central Valley Academy 18-4 in the third quarter, starting the second half with a 12-2 run and going ahead for the first time on a putback by Emma Sehring.

The Thunder regained the lead briefly on a basket by Savannah Moore, but Notre Dame scored the final six points of the third quarter and Central Valley Academy got as close as one points early in the fourth before Notre Dame ran off nine points in a row.

Sehring scored a game-high 20 points, and Ajla Sejdic added 13 points for the Jugglers. Destiny Woods scored nine points, and Caitlin Snyder had eight.

Moore led Central Valley Academy with 16 points. Savannah Sommer added 12 points, and Reilly Rich scored nine.

Earlier in the day, Brookfield defeated Madison 48-35, and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill was a 49-18 winner against Camden. The day got off to an exciting start with New York Mills beating Morrisville-Eaton 57-55 in overtime.

Proceeds raised by the games will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
