WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – A pair of power-play goals by freshman Regen Cavanagh – including the game-winner with only four seconds left in regulation – gave the Utica College men's hockey team a 2-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over Wilkes University on Friday night.
It was the third straight win for Utica College (7-5-0 overall, 6-2-0 UCHC). Coach Gary Heenan's Pioneers play King's College at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Revolution Ice Center in Pittson, Pennsylvania. The Monarchs were 1-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference before hosting Nazareth College (6-1-4, 4-1-2 UCHC) on Friday night.
Wilkes (6-4, 5-2 UCHC) had won two straight before Cavanagh's two goals - his seventh and eighth of the season - and goaltender Gianluca Baggetta's 32 saves led Utica College to victory.
After a scoreless first period, Rome's Joey Rutkowski and Clinton's Gregg Burmaster assisted on a power-play goal by Cavanagh at 14:21 of the second period.
Baggetta, who made 23 saves in the first two periods, made sure that 1-0 lead stood for nearly 22 minutes. Wilkes tied it up, though, when Tyler Barrow scored his ninth goal of the season on the power play with 3:45 to go in regulation.
Overtime seemed inevitable until Barrow was charged with a cross-checking penalty with 1:07 left to play. The Pioneers later capitalized on the man-up opportunity with just four seconds remaining, with freshman Tyler Dill assisting on Cavanagh's game-winner.
Cavanagh leads Utica with eight goals this season. He now has 12 points on the year. Burmaster remains UC's leading scorer with 14 points on six goals and eight assists.
Utica finished 2-for-6 on the power play; Wilkes finished 1 for 7.
Brandon Gordon made 18 saves for the Colonels, who are in their first season of Division III men's hockey.
