MARCY — It was a defensive game, and Holland Patent's Hunter Tarbania was in the middle of it all.

The senior linebacker was a key member of a defense that recovered four fumbles, recorded four sacks and blocked a punt and helped Holland Patent cap an unbeaten regular season with a 16-0 Class C East victory over Canastota on Saturday night at Whitesboro High School's Ed Wadas Athletic Complex.

Tarbania was in on two sacks and recovered two of those fumbles for the state-ranked No. 6 Golden Knights (6-0, 7-0), who already had clinched the program’s first league title since 1997.

Former Holland Patent coach Dave Langone’s 1990 team was the last to win its first seven games. Current coach Brian Briggs, who played under Langone, and his Golden Knights will host Thousand Islands (3-3 Class C West, 3-4 overall) in the Section III Class C quarterfinals at Rome Free Academy Stadium next week. The time and date will be determined when the playoff pairings in all five classes are announced on Sunday.

Senior running back Jason Haas was Holland Patent’s workhorse yet again. The powerful, shifty back ran behind linemen Orlando Cross, Andrew LaRock and the like, carrying the ball 24 times for 96 yards and a touchdown.

Senior quarterback Nick Herringshaw completed 6-of-13 passes for 63 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown to Jeff Sobel, who finished with four receptions for 51 yards. Josh Ernst's 27-yard field goal broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter.

Senior Mike Cummings blocked a punt and helped Tarbania on two sacks for a defense that allowed just 73 rushing yards.

Canastota (3-3, 4-3) won its first four games but lost three straight and just missed the playoffs. The Raiders, however, forced four fumbles and had four sacks on Saturday night.

There was no scoring in the first half. Holland Patent, however, moved the ball effectively at the end of the second quarter. Sobel took a screen pass 29 yards to Canastota’s 11, but the Golden Knights lost a snap two plays later, pushing themselves back 22 yards before turning the ball over on downs.

A messy play followed Tarbania’s fumble recovery at Canastota’s 25. Canastota's Cole DeKing forced a sack-fumble that was recovered by Weber and returned into Knights territory. Weber was eventually tackled and fumbled, which was recovered by Holland Patent junior Nick Fassett.

Another Tarbania fumble recovery later in the frame led to Ernst’s field goal with 2:47 left in the third quarter.

Cummings’ partially blocked punt landed at Canastota’s 30 and led to Holland Patent’s first fourth-quarter touchdown. Herringshaw avoided a sack, rolled right and found Sobel for a touchdown and a 10-0 lead. Haas scored on a 5-yard run with 2:21 left to play.
