HERKIMER, N.Y. – The Herkimer Magicians remain undefeated and now they have one league win under their belts. Adam Green ran for three touchdowns and James Aiello passed for two Friday in the Magicians’ 46-16 win over Sauquoit Valley’s Indians to open Class D East play for both squads.

"It feels good to get a league win," said coach Jason Alexander whose team won just once in league play last year and started this season with non-league wins against Phoenix and Section IV Whitney Point.

"That helped us," Alexander added, referring to the start outside league play. "They were good, quality football teams and they got us ready for league play."

The Herkimer attack was quick and efficient Friday. Herkimer took the opening kickoff and put the game’s first points on the board four plays later when Green ran 25 yards for his first touchdown the first time he handled the ball.

The Magicians got the ball back on a punt and went up 13-0 midway through the first quarter. Aiello completed the first pass he attempted to Zach Parmon and connected with Wyatt Renshaw on his second for a 15-yard touchdown on a fourth-down play a short time later.

"James has done a great job," Alexander said of the senior signal caller who completed four of six passes for 138 yards. "The offense as a whole is clicking. Everybody is understanding their roles and executing where they need to be."

Aiello delivered again early in the second quarter, hitting Braden Alexander on his right side with a pass the coach’s son converted into a 79-yard touchdown. Parmon and Renshaw added five-yard touchdown runs and Herkimer led 34-0 at halftime with kicker Mike Malinowski going four-for-five on conversions.

Green ran for two more touchdowns in the second half, scoring before and after Sauquoit Valley put its first points on the board. A bad snap on a punt gave Herkimer possession on the Indians’ 11-yard line in the third quarter and Green ran for a touchdown on the next play from scrimmage. Sauquoit Valley quarterback Seamus Crowe broke loose on a 49-yard touchdown run and the Indians added two points on Zack Gifford’s conversion run. Two plays later, Green found paydirt again on a 61-yard touchdown run.

Gifford ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Green ran 11 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns, and Renshaw, who leads the unbeaten Magicians with eight touchdowns, had 71 yards on 14 carries.

Green, Andre McNair and Codey LaQuee each had seven tackles to lead the Herkimer defense. Aidan Ploss added five tackles, shared a sack with McNair, and recovered a Sauquoit Valley fumble.

Herkimer has outscored its opponents 124-46 to start the season.

"We can’t be satisfied," Jason Alexander said. " We have a lot of tough games coming up."

The Magicians play on the road Friday at Frankfort-Schuyler. Sauquoit Valley gets Waterville at home Friday.
