HERKIMER, N.Y. – Mike DeRollo came within one batter of pitching a five-inning no-hitter for Ilion Post’s junior team Wednesday in a 12-0 American Legion baseball win over Moran/Sylvan Beach Post.

DeRollo struck out eight batters and settled for a one-hit shutout. He walked one batter in the first inning and another in the fifth, and hit a batter in the third. Two of those runners were erased on the bases by catcher Brayden Zahniser – threw out Tanner Young trying to steal second base in the first inning and picked Brad Lyon off to end the third.

DeRollo had a 12-run lead and was one inning away from ending the game under the 10-run American Legion mercy rule when he retired Alex Campbell on a ground ball to start the top of the fifth. DeRollo then walked Evan Bell and struck out Cole Narolis. Lyon, batting for the first time after entering the game as a courtesy runner, fouled off a 1-0 pitch and hit DeRollo’s next offering for a single.

Pitching with multiple runners on base for the first time, DeRollo struck out the next batter to end the game.

Offensively, DeRollo singled and scored on a Jack Bono triple in the first inning.

Bono tripled again with the bases loaded the second time he batted in Ilion Post’s 11-run third inning. Brady Hoffman drove in a run with his one-out double to get the scoring started. Zahniser walked with the bases loaded and Jeff DeSarro followed with a two-run single. Another walk re-loaded the bases before Lucas Hartman delivered a two-run single. Tyler Rosati, whose single had started the inning, was hit by a pitch, DeRollo walked and a run had scored on a passed ball before Bono cracked his second triple of the night at Herkimer College. Hoffman picked up his second RBI when Bono scored on his single, and Logan Rubas doubled before the inning ended.

Rosati, DeRollo and Bono, the first three batters in the Ilion Post lineup, each scored two runs. Bono had four runs batted in while Hoffman, DeSarro and Hartman each added two.

Ilion Post (14-5) took six straight wins into Thursday’s game against William Russell Post on the college field. District V tournament play begins next week in Utica but Ilion Post will play a Saturday game in Fort Plain to finish its regular season.

The current win streak includes a 17-0 win Monday over Roberts Post, a doubleheader sweep Saturday in which Ilion Post beat Whitestown Post 3-2 and 15-4, Friday’s 20-5 rout of New Hartford Post, and a 10-7 win over Moran/Sylvan Beach Post July 5.

DeRollo allowed two hits in three innings Monday and Rosati finished a game that was stopped after four. DeSarro drove in three runs while Zahniser and Shawn Capes each drove in two. Rubas scored three times.

Ilion Post spotted Whitestown Post a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Saturday’s first game. Hoffman and Hartman both went 3-for-3 and Ilion Post took the lead in the top of the fifth inning while Nicholas Greene shut the hosts out over the final six.

Hoffman went 4-for-4 with six RBI in Game 2 against Whitestown Post. Bono scored five times and DeSarro pitched a complete game with six strikeouts for the win. Whitestown Post took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning and scored only one run after that.

Rosati and Bono each had four runs batted in and Hoffman homered and drove in three runs against New Hartford Post. Hartman and Capes also had three runs batted in.

Hoffman had two hits and two RBI in the first Moran/Sylvan Beach Post game. Ilion Post led 10-2 before allowing five runs in the top of the seventh.
