Former Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School and Herkimer County Community College pitcher Zach Durant on Wednesday was named to the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) East Division All-Star Team.

The eighth PGCBL All-Star Game is Wednesday, July 18, at Dunn Field in Elmira — home of the Elmira Pioneers.

Durant, a right-hander from Verona who plays for the Amsterdam Mohawks, is joined on the East Division All-Star Team by five players from the Utica Blue Sox and five players from the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs.

Through Tuesday night's games, Durant was third in the league with a 1.66 earned-run average. After making eight appearances and four starts, Durant was 2-1 and had struck out 28 batters in 27 innings.

The 6-foot-4, 181-pound Durant helped HCCC's Generals win another National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III title and reach the NJCAA Division III World Series. He made 11 appearances this spring — all in relief — and was 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings for the nationally ranked Generals, who finished 35-9 overall.

Representing the Utica Blue Sox on this year's PGCBL All-Star Team are outfielders Khalyd Cox (Savannah State) and Isiah Torres (Grambling State), catcher Colton Bender (Quinnipiac), and pitchers Blaise Lomon (Carl Albert State) and J.T. Gosweiler (Iona).

Entering Wednesday, Cox was hitting .373 with seven doubles, six home runs, 20 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Torres is batting .330 and Bender .327. Lomon is the league leader with a 1.28 ERA after six starts. He is 2-0 with 34 strikeouts in 28 innings. Gosweiler is 3-1 with seven saves and 18 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings.

Three of the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs' all-stars on Wednesday ranked among the best hitters in the PGCBL, including league leader Ryan Hernandez (San Jacinto CC), a first baseman hitting .451 with six homers and 32 RBIs entering Wednesday. Teammate Ryan Toohers (Villanova), another first baseman, was fourth in the league with a .390 average, tied for the league lead with seven homers, and was first in the league with 40 RBIs.

Mohawk Valley outfielder Austin Pollack (Manhattanville), third in the league with a .398 average, also was selected along with DiamondDawgs pitchers Zach Taglieri (Citadel) and Ryan Rodriguez (UC Davis). Taglieri is 1-0 with a 0.62 ERA and Rodriguez is 2-0.

All-Star Game festivities begin next Wednesday in Elmira with the Home Run Derby.

The PGCBL All-Stars are nominated and selected by the coaches. Each coach selects two players at each position, three catchers, one utility player and 12 pitchers.

• The New York Collegiate Baseball League (NCBL) All-Stars edged the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL) All-Stars 7-6 on Monday night at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. No local players were named to the NCBL All-Star Team, but Sherrill Silversmiths teammates Matt Fitzgerald (Clinton/Notre Dame High/Utica College) and recent Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School graduate Dewey Roden are among their team's top hitters this season.

Fitzgerald, a catcher who will be a Utica College senior in the fall, is batting .354 with four home runs and 18 RBIs. Roden, named to USA TODAY'S All-New York second team, is a first baseman and UMass-Lowell freshman-to-be who is batting .299 with two homers and 17 RBIs.
