SATSUMA, Ala. – P.J. Anadio will be able to write at least one familiar name on his lineup card Friday when the Future Ones take the field for the opening night of the American Softball Association’s inaugural season.

Anadio’s team drafted Sammy Smaldone with the final pick of the 13th round of the league’s initial draft last week at Moe’s Original Bar B Que. Smaldone, a Delmar native who later played at Siena College, was a freshman on Anadio’s 2013 NJCAA Division III national championship team at Herkimer College

Smaldone batted over .500 both seasons and hit 19 home runs for the Generals. She hit .545 with 10 home runs, 47 runs batted in, 61 runs scored as a freshman on the national championship team, and ranked in the top 10 in the nation in six categories as an All-American as a sophomore when she batted .541 with nine home runs, 53 RBI – giving her an even 100 for her Herkimer career – and 48 runs scored. She also hit 38 doubles in two seasons, including 23 as a sophomore when she was second in the nation. She finished sixth in the NJCAA in RBI, seventh in home runs and slugging percentage, and eighth in batting average in 2014.

Upstate New York is also represented on Anadio’s roster by Faith Cain and Anna Gatti, two former Syracuse University players.

Former Texas A&M University and San Diego State University pitcher Rebecca Arbino and former University of Mississippi outfielder RT Cantillo were the team’s first two selections on draft day. Future Ones picked last in the first round but had the first pick in the second and selected back-to-back with the fourth and fifth picks.

One or two games are scheduled every day through the July 25 end of the regular season. July 26 is an open date for make-up games and tie-breakers and the best-of-play championship series begins the following day.

Future Ones will play Friday’s nightcap at Satsuma High School against E1 Pro Ballers. Moh-Beel! USA and Outkast take the field first at 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for the doubleheader and free for children 12 and under in their baseball and softball uniforms. All games can be viewed on the ASBA Network,
