HERKIMER, N.Y. – The Hudson Valley Community College Vikings shook off a two-point loss at home Friday night and won by two at Herkimer College Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings (2-1), beaten 79-77 by Jefferson Community College Friday, trailed by eight points on the road at halftime Saturday but pulled out a 73-71 victory. They took the lead with just over two minutes left to play and broke the final tie in the final minute.

General Sierra Henry’s three-point shot after the teams traded turnovers out of a timeout tied the game at 71 with 25.4 seconds left to play. Hudson Valley called a timeout of its own then got the ball inside to Hayley Jones for the go-ahead basket with 15.5 seconds on the clock. Jones drew a foul but missed her free throw and failed to complete a three-point play.

Herkimer’s Felicia Price fouled out on the play.

The Generals rushed down the floor and got a shot for Nylasia Sutton whose three-pointer went off the rim as the buzzer went off indicating the end of the game.

Jones scored six of her eight points in the last three minutes of the game.

Hudson Valley outscored Herkimer (1-3) 21-9 in the third quarter and entered the fourth with a 53-49 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Carli Brenon put the Generals back on top and Herkimer went up by as many as five points in the final period. Henry’s three-point shot with 3:07 left put the Generals ahead for the last time at 68-65.

Hudson Valley pulled within one point when Jones put back an offensive rebound. The Vikings took the lead back on another basket by Jones following a timeout. Jessica Getty’s layup made it a 71-68 game with 1:10 left to play.

Herkimer started strong and held a double-digit lead after scoring 24 points in the first quarter. The Generals were outscored 43-25 in the second and third quarters.

Maria Lomanto and Henry led Herkimer with 24 and 23 points, respectively. Lomanto had 15 in the first quarter and did not score in the fourth. Henry scored 10 points in the fourth and Brenon, who had three free throws through three quarters, added eight of her 11.

Cameran Henderson scored 14 points and Kali Szczepanski had 13 for the Vikings who had six players with eight or more.

The Generals were coming off an 84-40 loss to Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica during the week. Mohawk Valley scored the first 16 points Wednesday but Herkimer came back and tied the game in the second quarter before being outscored 59-14 in the second half. Sutton led the Generals with 19 points while Jasmine Michaux scored 23 points and Kathryn Kanhoye had 22 for the Hawks.

Mohawk Valley, ranked third in the nation, suffered its first loss Saturday when the Hawks were beaten 76-67 by Monroe College in the first round of Monroe Community College’s Murph Shapiro Classic. The Hawks were beaten 94-66 by Union County College in Sunday’s consolation.
