HOMER, N.Y. — The Poland Tornadoes lost to Wheatland-Chili 3-2 in triple overtime Sunday in their return to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Class D girls soccer finals at Homer High School.

The Chiefs, who beat Poland 2-0 in last year’s state final, won the game on Travina Meeks’ golden goal 23 seconds into the sudden victory third overtime period.

Poland, 20-3-0 and ranked No. 3 in the state, received a masterful performance by senior co-captain Claire Lepper. The College of Saint Rose-committed goalkeeper made 18 saves in Poland’s fifth state finals appearance in the last six seasons — and sixth state final in total.

Wheatland-Chili (21-1-1), the state’s top-ranked Class D team, took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on a high-arching shot by Lindsey Clar from 30 yards out. Poland junior MacKensie Gokey tied the score on a free kick in the 50th.

The Chiefs regained the lead when Hannah Callaghan scored in the sixth minute of the first 10-minute overtime period. Eighth-grader Alexis Bates, who scored her first career goal in Saturday’s semifinals, tied the game 2-2 in the second minute of the second overtime period, eventually sending the match into a five-minute sudden victory period.
