Offensively, Thomas R. Proctor assistant coach Byron Abraham thought his Raiders played exceptional when Baldwinsville, ranked No. 17 in the state, came to Utica.
Points given up on special teams, however, were the difference as Baldwinsville stayed unbeaten with a 35-28 victory over Proctor.
In the Class AA-2 league opener for both teams, the Bees (1-0, 3-0) saw Aquari Warner pick up a muffed and take it 30 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and never looked back.
Landon Johnson (77 rushing yards, two touchdowns, six tackles) scored from four yards out to get within 28-21 in the fourth. However, Warner popped a 53-yard TD run with about one minute remaining to stretch Baldwinsville’s lead.
“We played well but gave up turnover to start the game,” Abraham said. “Offense-for-offense, we matched them pretty well.”
Jalen Woodson had 15 carries for 93 yards and a score in the loss. QB Logan Wilcox completed 11 of 20 passes for 168 yards, and tallied eight tackles on defense.
West Canada Valley 27, Westmoreland 14
Matt Tobin ran for four touchdowns as West Canada Valley won 27-14 at Westmoreland on Saturday in a Class D nonleague crossover game.
Tobin put West Canada (0-1, 2-1) on the board on a 28-yard run in the first. Cory Andron caught a 15-yard TD pass from Mike Sweeney to get the Bulldogs within 7-6.
West Canada responded with three straight scores on Tobin runs of 8, 4 and 8 yards.
Sweeney ran it in to get within two touchdowns in the fourth.
Westmoreland fell to 0-3 overall.
Cazenovia 41, Notre Dame 7
Head coach Jake DerCola said that the Cazenovia Lakers were "men on a mission" since his Notre Dame team ended their 52-game home winning streak following their state championship campaign.
The state-ranked Lakers had that game on the back of their minds, winning at Notre Dame 41-7 in this year's Class B East battle.
Cazenovia (3-0, 3-0) was led by QB Matt Regan, who ran for two touchdowns and threw another.
Isiah Czarnecki ran eight times for 35 yards and Notre Dame's (1-2, 1-2) only score in the fourth. The sophomore RB/LB also picked up double digit tackles, including a sack. Athletic junior QB Treijen Garrett completed 6 of 12 passed for 51 yards while rushing 15 times for 60 yards.
"They wanted to get after us," DerCola said.
Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 53, Camden 0
It was a dominant defensive effort by Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, giving up just 31 total yards in the Red Devils’ 53-0 triumph over visiting Camden in a Class B East bout.
Bryce Cousin ran 14 times for 63 yards and three touchdowns for VVS (1-2, 1-2). Alex Oliver (61 rushing yards) and Zachary Audette (60 rushing yards) each added a score.
Oliver completed 5 of 12 passes for 113 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Nathan Palmer was the main recipient, catching four passes for 100 yards and 57-yard touchdown in the third to extend VVS’s lead 34-0.
On defense, Zachary Nell picked off two passes for the Red Devils. Anthony Farina and Cade Decker each had a sack.
Josh Mayden collected 12 tackles and 35 rushing yards for Camden (1-2, 1-2). Gavin Vera caught an interception.
Holland Patent 21, Clinton 14
Nick Herringshaw’s pair of touchdown passes was a huge part of 21 straight points for the Golden Knights as Holland Patent defeated host Clinton 21-14.
Tanner Deveans connected with A.J. Clemons for a 29-yard touchdown in the Class C East bout, pushing the Warriors (1-1, 1-2) to an 8-0 first quarter advantage.
Jake Beer’s 8-yard touchdown pass from Herringshaw put Holland Patent (2-1, 2-1) within 8-7 before Jason Haas’ 1-yard run put the Golden Knights ahead 14-8 at the half. Herringshaw’s second TD pass came on a 3-yard toss to D.J. Harter for a 21-8 lead in the fourth.
A 2-yard TD run by Deveans put Clinton within one touchdown late in the contest.
Sherburne-Earlville 51, Adirondack 0
Lincoln Owen scored four touchdowns and let his defense pitch a shutout in Sherburne-Earlville’s 51-0 win at Adirondack.
The Class C East game witnessed the Marauders (1-1, 1-2) pick up their first win after scoring 29 points in the first half versus the Wildcats (0-3, 0-3).
Owen scored from 40, 5, 12 and 16 yards out. Jessey Lynch and Vinny Albertina each scored one rushing touchdown. Dawson Lagoe caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Gabe Irwin in the first quarter.
Ben Gerling made 10 tackles, three assisted tackles and one sack for Adirondack.
Canastota 68, Little Falls 6
Canastota received scoring from all angles in a 68-6 win over Little Falls in a Class C East contest.
Canastota (3-0, 3-0) saw two touchdowns from Nick Weber. Brandon Otts returned a pair of punts 45 and 80 yards for scores. Ben Marshall also threw two touchdowns to Erick Marsh.
Parker Tooley's 18-yard touchdown pass to Mason Trumbull was Little Falls' (0-1, 1-2) lone score.
General Brown 70, Sauquoit Valley 13
General Brown (1-0. 3-0), ranked No. 7 in the state rankings, defeated Sauquoit Valley (0-1, 2-1) 70-13 in a nonleague game.
