Senior captain Mikhail Bushinski had a goal and an assist and sophomore goaltender Gianluca Baggetta made 20 first-period saves as the Utica College men's hockey team beat Briancon 3-1 in the Pioneers' exhibition opener Friday in France.

Jacob Gerson and Dalton Carter also scored for the Pioneers, who will play Grenoble Sunday. UC will play four times during the team's nine-day excursion.

Roman Ammirato had two assists and Justin Derlago and Anthony McVeigh each had one in Friday's win in southeastern France.

Baggetta shut out Briancon in the first period and Patrik Virtanen made 16 saves and did not allow a goal in the second period. Henry Dill, UC's third goaltender, stopped eight of nine Briancon shots in the final period.

The Pioneers have won three conference regular-season titles in the last five seasons. They finished 18-9 overall in 2016-17.

UC opens its regular season Oct. 21 against Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. The Pioneers play Fredonia in their home opener Friday, Oct. 27.
