Bloomsburg Unviersity tailback Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) scored a career-high three touchdowns and the Division II Huskies held on for a 24-20 win over Stonehill in their season opener.

Elliott rushed for 112 yards in the first half and scored all three of his touchdowns before halftime, including a career-long 75-yard run. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior finished with 107 yards on 17 carries.

Elliott, a first-team all-conference running back as a junior — he led Bloomsburg with 1,447 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns last year — has been named to the NFL DraftBible.com's 2017 NFL Draft Watch List. Lindy's Football Annual also has named Elliott a second-team preseason All-American.

Defensive end Dan Appley (Herkimer) had four tackles, including a strip-sack and fumble recovery, as 17th-ranked Cortland State edged Heidelberg University of Ohio 30-28 in its season opener.

St. John Fisher College linebacker and captain David Carroll (Oneida) had nine tackles and Jon Piersma (Waterville) had two in the Cardinals' 52-10 win over Olivet.

Morrisville State College freshman Eddie Campos (Rome/Rome Free Academy) had six tackles in a 28-0 loss to St. Lawrence University.

 

Women's Soccer

Senior forward Erin O'Connor (Remsen) was named the MVP of the Flower City Classic and SUNY Geneseo's Female Athlete of the Week after helping the Knights go 1-0-1. She scored an unassisted goal in a 3-0 win over Union College.

William Smith College senior Shay Callahan (Holland Patent) had an assist in the fourth-ranked Herons' 3-1 win over Puget Sound.

Nazareth College's Michaela Soules (Camden) had two assists in a 3-0 win over Allegheny College.

 

Field Hockey

Sophomore forward Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) was named SUNY Athletic Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week and Cortland State's Female Athlete of the Week after helping the Red Dragons start the season 2-0. She had a goal and two assists against Nazareth College and then scored three goals and assisted on another in a win over Elmira College.

Sophomore Alyssa Orsino (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley), a first-team all-conference selection last fall, scored a goal in each of Keuka College's first two games.

Brockport State's Abby Meagher (Camden) had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win over Keuka College.

St. Lawrence University's Carly Dziekan (Yorkville/New York Mills) had an assist in a 5-2 win over Oneonta.

Wells College's Ivy Cromp (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) had an assist in a 2-1 loss to Ohio Wesleyan.

 

Men's Soccer

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences striker Zak Giorgi (Whitesboro) scored in a 5-1 win over Paul Smith's College.

 

Women's Volleyball

Cobleskill senior libero Gabby Clark (Oneida) was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Fighting Tigers win the Blazer Invitational hosted by Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Cobleskill sophomore hitter and Herkimer County Community College transfer Mackenzie Holbert (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) averaged 7.3 assists and 1.3 digs and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

 

Men's Golf

Utica College freshman Patrick Coughlin (New Hartford) was named the Empire 8 Conference Golfer of the Week after his two-day total of 159 led the Pioneers at the St. Lawrence University Invitational. He was tied for sixth after shooting a 75 in the first round and he finished tied for 17th after carding an 84 the following day.
