As sure as a baby will fill its diaper, you can pretty much count on the weak of mind to steal or vandalize campaign signs every political season.

Don't you wish they'd just grow up?

The fact that the campaign in the 22nd US Congressional District is so contentious doesn't help. Both Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-New Hartford, and her Democratic challenger, Anthony Brindisi, have reported stolen and/or vandalized campaign signs in recent weeks. The signs have been vandalized with obscenities and other scribblings scrawled across them, while some have been stolen. Brindisi’s campaign has filed a complaint with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Both sides, of course, blame the other for the miscreant behavior.

"Our campaign has been calling on Brindisi to denounce the coordinated theft and destruction of our yard signs for weeks," said Raychel Renna, Tenney's campaign manager, in an emailed statement.

Ellen Foster, campaign manager for Anthony Brindisi, said: "Destroying or stealing yard signs of any kind is wrong and I condemn it. Claudia Tenney should call on her supporters to immediately stop this recent wave of vandalization."

Sadly, this nonsense happens every election season. O-D files show numerous reports of such incidents in the past, including the arrests of people caught stealing and/or vandalizing campaign signs.

Come on. No real supporter of any candidate would — or should — act so irresponsibly. We'd say such behavior is more likely to happen in the seventh-grade class election, but we don't wish to disparage junior high school students, most of whom know better.

That only leaves us with one thing to say to the Brindisi/Tenney "supporters" out there who have become a sign of the times.

Grow up. You're an embarrassment to democracy.
