Part of West Steele Street in Herkimer is becoming a one-way street for a temporary period.

The road section, between Third Avenue and the intersection of Mohawk and South Caroline streets, will only serve eastbound traffic temporarily starting Thursday.

DOT officials said the change will allow the department to alter traffic signal phasing to increase the time allotted for green lights affecting southbound traffic on South Caroline Street in an effort to improve traffic flow and business access, according to the Department of Transportation.

DOT crews plan to monitor traffic and work with the Village of Herkimer on any other modifications.
