WEBB — A Rochester area man died Sunday afternoon in a snowmobile accident on the Webb Trail System, the Webb Police Department said.

Shortly after 4 p.m. the Old Forge fire and ambulance responded to snowmobile trail #1 following a report that a snowmobiler had crashed into a steep ravine and that CPR was in progress, officers said.

Police said Larry E. DeMarte, 72, of Hilton failed to negotiate a turn and went airborne into a ravine and creek. The snowmobile then rolled on top of DeMarte, trapping him under water until members of his riding group were able to get to him, officials said.

Members of the riding group and bystanders attempted lifesaving efforts, but were unsuccessful, police said.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation showed that the cause of the accident was imprudent speed.

Inlet police, a New York state forest ranger and Morin’s Towing Service assisted at the scene.

DeMarte was the second person to die in a snowmobile crash in Webb on Sunday. Michelle Wander, 46, of Liverpool, was killed in a crash shortly after midnight Sunday.
