WESTMORELAND — A Vernon man was listed in critical condition Thursday night following a motor vehicle accident, Oneida County sheriff's deputies said.
James Gonzalez, 35, was a passenger in one of the vehicle's and was flown by Mercy Flight Helicopter to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, officials said.
The investigation into the accident revealed that Claude Crowell, 46, of Rome, was traveling south on State Route 26 when he attempted to turn left onto Skinner Road, deputies said. That's when his van crossed in front of another van operated by Ashlee Rubyor, who was headed north on State Route 26, deputies said.
Gonzalez was a passenger in Crowell's vehicle.
Crowell was treated and released at the scene; Rubyor was taken by Central Oneida County Ambulance to the St. Elizabeth Campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System for apparent minor injuries, officials said.
Crowell was issued a citation for failing to yield to oncoming traffic on a left turn returnable to Westmoreland Town Court at a later date, deputies said.
The Oneida County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Unit, Forensic Identification Unit and Accident Reconstruction Unit all responded to the scene to assist Road Patrol in investigating the accident. The road was closed for several hours.
New York State Police and Westmoreland firefighters also were at the scene.
