The Colgate women’s hockey team could not recover from a myriad of penalties in the third period on the way to an 8-5 loss to Mercyhurst at Mercyhurst Ice Center Sunday, Jan. 6. The Raiders had tied the Lakers 1-1 Saturday, with the lone goal going to Jesse Eldridge. Julia Vandyk recorded six of the 18 game saves, including the one that sent the game into overtime.

In Sunday’s game, Shae Labbe and Tanner Gates forced the puck to the goal mouth, and then Malia Schneider had an easy tap-in for her 10th goal on the campaign to even the score at 1-1 midway through the frame.

Just 62 seconds later, Nemo Neubauerova fired a wrist shot past the Laker goalie to make it a 2-1 game. It was the freshman’s fifth goal of the season. Olivia Zafuto netted her third goal of the season before Mercyhurst answered with one going into the second stanza ahead 3-2.

Mercyhurst tied the game at 3-3 just under seven minutes into the period and then Eldridge scored her 15th goal on the year to give the Raiders a 4-3 lead going into the second break.

After the Lakers scored just over two minutes into the third frame, Gates and Eldridge forced the puck to the goal mouth where Schneider tapped home her second on the afternoon. But The Lakers scored three straight power play tallies and then one more on an empty net to seal the game.

The Raiders return to Class of 1965 Arena Friday, Jan. 11, to battle ECAC foe Quinnipiac. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. in Hamilton.
