NEW HARTFORD — A Middle Settlement Academy student was charged with several weapons charges after allegedly bringing a gun to school and hiding it outside, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were called to the school’s campus, located at Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES in New Hartford, at about 8 a.m. The school was placed into lockdown while the gun was secured.

Officials said Ka’Shawn Carter brought the gun to school on the bus. He then hid the gun near a water spigot on the building, where it was found a short time later by staff members.

Deputies said there was no plan to use the gun at the school.

Ka’Shawn was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds.

He is being held at the Oneida County Jail awaiting arraignment.

Deputies said the investigation is ongoing.
