Losing a job is never easy on the family — especially when it is near or during the holiday season.

Even with things seeming rough at the moment, Herkimer’s Crystal Brouillard is trying to see the lighter side of things thanks to Catholic Charities of Herkimer County and Operation Sunshine.

“(Catholic Charities) have been a big help,” Brouillard said. “This year, it’s been a crazy year, I lost my job and they are helping me and they want to make sure that I sign up with them so that they can help me out.”

Each year, Operation Sunshine raises money to provide food and toys for those who might otherwise be unable to afford them. The campaign’s goal this season is $65,000.

A mother of three, Brouillard said she and her boyfriend found out about Operation Sunshine through Catholic Charities of Herkimer County last year when they needed aid and are looking forward to receiving help once again through the program during their difficult time.

“Last Christmas, they got clothes, some toys, coloring books and some learning stuff,” Brouillard said. “They were happy. They were very happy that Santa Claus came for them. I am just thankful that they help families in need.”
