A man is in stable condition after being shot in the chest Friday night, Sgt. Michael Curley of the Utica Police Department said.

Curley said the shooting, which occurred late Friday night, happened in the area near Rutger Street and Kossuth Avenue.

There, police found a male who had been “struck in the chest with a small caliber round,” Curley said, adding that the victim was then transported to a local hospital.

“He is now still in the hospital but stable with non-life threatening injuries,” Curley added.

Police are unsure what prompted the shooting.

Both the assailant’s and the victim’s names have not been released, as the investigation is still ongoing.
