ROME — A dog was killed and a firefighter injured in a Rome blaze Thursday, according to city fire officials.
Firefighters at about 3:40 p.m. were dispatched to 5266 Shakes Road, where upon arrival they were met with heavy fire in the rear of the residence, officials said.
Several layers of roofing made it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze, they said.
Because there were no fire hydrants in the area, New London and Vienna fire departments were requested to bring water tankers. Durhamville firefighters and the Oneida County air supply van also responded.
Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the occupants.
The fire was deemed under control at 4:35 p.m.
Cause of the blaze is under investigation, officials said.
