Masonic Care Community event canceled
The 125th Anniversary Community Party scheduled to take place Saturday, May 19, at the Masonic Care Community has been canceled due to impending inclement weather.
American Legion starts drum and bugle corps for area youth
An American Legion drum and bugle corps is returning to the Mohawk Valley this summer, Utica Post 229 Commander Jim George has announced.
An informational meeting for interested youth and parents takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Utica Post 229, 409 Herkimer Road.
The program is open to youth in seventh through 12th grades in Herkimer, Oneida and Madison counties.
The corps goes by the name of Mid-York Musketeers, and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, explained Madison County American Legion Commander Bill Jenkins, corps director and drum instructor.
Rehearsals will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Utica Post 229. He said they already have enough equipment and uniforms for a drumline and color guard. Next will be instruments and uniforms for brass players.

Local extras needed for Utica commercial shoot
A commercial production group out of New York City is traveling to Utica to shoot locations throughout the city and surrounding area for an upcoming Victoria Beer commercial.
The production group is looking for extras and possible crew for the two days they are scheduled to shoot in Utica, Wednesday and Thursday, May 23-24.
Extras and crew who are selected will be paid.

Stage Two to conduct auditions for 'Mamma Mia'
Stage Two Theatre Company is conducting auditions for the musical "Mamma Mia," based on the music of ABBA, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 20, and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at the Herkimer High School auditorium, 801 W. German St.
In addition to a large ensemble and featured roles for performers ages 14 and older, there are lead roles for three men and three women who can play between the ages of 30 to 50 years old.
Rehearsals for the show will begin Monday, June 4.
Show dates are July 26-28.

Nonprofits receive Community Health Awards from Excellus
The following three local nonprofit organizations are among nine in the region that have been chosen from among more than 45 applications to receive Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Spring 2018 Community Health Awards. Each award recipient will receive up to $4,000 of the $25,000 allocated by the company to help fund health and wellness programs in its 14-county Utica/Rome/North Country region.
• Stevens-Swan Humane Society, Utica – Funds will help offset the cost of rabies vaccines for all animals adopted from the shelter as well as animals vaccinated at 14 public rabies clinics held between April and November 2018.
• The Farmers’ Museum, Cooperstown – Funding will support "Garden Hacks," a weekly gardening mentorship program focusing on health and wellness that is offered to museum visitors throughout the season.
• Clinton Chamber of Commerce – Award funding will support the Power of the Produce program, which helps children learn about and try new fruits and vegetables at the Clinton Farmers Market. They will complete and sign a "Passport to Health" at the market. As they attend market sessions, their Passport to Health card is marked for their attendance and they receive $2 in wooden tokens to spend on fresh fruit and vegetables during each market visit. The Clinton Farmers Market runs June 7-Oct. 4.
Kocherzhuk inducted into Phi Kappa Phi
Iryna Kocherzhuk of Utica recently was initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
Kocherzhuk is pursuing a degree in management at Alfred State College.
