PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Old Forge’s Maddie Phaneuf announced on her Facebook page Wednesday that she will no longer be competing in the women’s 15K Individual Biathlon in the Winter Olympics due to strep throat.
According to the 22-year-old’s professional Facebook page, she said, "Bad news...I woke up with a scratchy throat this morning, and it turned out to be strep. Unfortunately, this takes me out of the Individual race tomorrow. Words cannot describe how upset I am, knowing how close I was to racing in my first Olympics. I'm trying to keep my chin up, and hoping to recover quickly! There's still a chance I may get the opportunity to race in the Women's Relay later, so fingers crossed."
Phaneuf was supposed to race in the event at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday, but the race was postponed to Thursday morning due to high winds.
