The community is invited to come out for the annual and always festive Kickoff Party meeting for the Relay for Life of Madison County Tuesday, Jan. 16. There, they can sign up their own teams, learn more about the workings of the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS), and generally just enjoy the camaraderie of others joining the fight against the disease.
“Kickoff is our opportunity to showcase the many programs and services the American Cancer Society provides to the folks in Madison County,” said Melanie Francis, ACS community development manager. “Our teams are proud of their hard work and are always looking for more neighbors to join them in the fight.”
“People should come to Kickoff for two main reasons,” said event chair Jennifer Armlin. “One would be to get information on what Relay is, how to get involved with Relay and what happens to the funds that are raised through all Relays. Also, we have some major changes coming this way. Kickoff will give a brief summary of some of those changes.”
One of the biggest changes is the venue this year because of work being done at the track -- this time, the Relay for Life of Madison County will be held from 4 p.m. to midnight June 2 at Vets Field in Oneida.
The Relay for Life will continue to celebrate and honor local cancer survivors and their caregivers, and show how funds raised benefit the local community.
“Funds raised help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways,” Francis said, “each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness.”
“My favorite things about chairing the event is seeing so many people come back to the event every year,” Armlin said. “I love seeing the teams at Kickoff and then seeing them at the various meetings we have. We have become a family.”
The Relay For Life of Madison County Kickoff will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 at the Kallet Civic Center, located at 159 Main St. in Oneida.
