It’s that time of year to let the fur fly — teddy bear fur that is.
Thousands of teddy bears are prepared to take to the sky and fill the ice during the 13th annual Teddy Bear Toss at Saturday at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium during the Utica College hockey game.
“The Teddy Bear Toss is really the highlight of the year for us,” said Katie Reilly, director of marketing of New York Sash. “New York Sash is really big on giving back to the community. We have been doing this for a long time. It’s not just the sponsorship for us — it’s really one way our staff gives back.”
So, when the UC men’s hockey team, which faces Neumann University at 7 p.m., scores its first goal, fans will be able to give to a good cause by throwing their teddy bears onto the ice. The thousands of stuffed animals will be gathered by New York Sash and donated to a collaborative toy drive with partners Operation Sunshine, Marine Corps Toys for Tots, "First News with Keeler in the Morning" and WIBX, Spectrum and Utica Mack.
“(The Teddy Bear Toss) is just a meaningful holiday event,” Reilly said. “It’s also so cool to see so many people in the community come out and donate and get excited.”
Now, even though the game is sold out and you feel like you’re going to miss it — don’t fret. The event will be televised on WKTV.
You also still can donate your stuffed animal by it to New York Sash at 349 Oriskany Blvd. in Whitesboro.
It’s never too late to give a stuffed animal to a child in need.
