The 12th annual Wilson “Rube” Brown Cup inter-club golf competition between the Seven Oaks Golf Club of Hamilton and the Barker Brook Golf Club of Oriskany Falls was held Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Barker Brook Golf Club in Oriskany Falls. This tournament honors the memory of Wilson ‘Rube” Brown, a special friend and fellow competitor of both golf courses.

In another highly, spirited, contested golf match between these two teams, Seven Oaks Golf Club was able to dominate this competition in all three phases. Seven Oaks jumped to an early lead which they would not relinquish and for the second year in a row took possession of the highly valued “Rube Cup.”

Played in a Ryder Cup format, 34 members from each team competed in three individual nine-hole match play contests. The first nine holes of the two-man team competition used a Better Ball Format, followed by a nine-hole two-man team Alternate Shot Format, and then concluding in a nine-hole individual head-to-head Singles Format.

On a sunny, unusually humid autumn day, the golfers opened play in a very competitive first round of Better Ball. This format got off to a very competitive start as Seven Oaks opened an early small lead in the event by a score of 9½-7½ pts.

Round Two found the two teams competing in an Alternate Shot Format. It was here during this portion of the competition that Seven Oaks took control of the match and was able to extend their lead within this format and come away with a dominating 11½-5½ victory. Seven Oaks now took a decisive insurmountable overall 21-13 lead heading into the Singles portion of the competition.

Round Three was comprised of 34 Singles matches, a straight-up head-to-head competition. Riding their momentum from the Second Round, Seven Oaks was able to continue their solid team play. Barker Brook hung tough though, but could never really gain any momentum. Seven Oaks continued to dominate this portion of the competition as well, with a winning score of 21-13 pts.

In the end, Seven Oaks was able to maintain possession of the valued “Rube Cup.” winning by a convincing overall score of 42-26 points. With this win, Seven Oaks has now evened up the score in this competition at six matches to six matches.

Both squads would like to extend a “thank you” to Michael Intartaglia, owner of Barker Brook Golf Club, and his staff for their efforts in making this year’s outing a very enjoyable event.

It was a fun day of laughter and memories; with both teams thoroughly enjoying the friendly camaraderie and stiff competition displayed by each team. As such, everyone anxiously looks forward to next year’s rematch at Seven Oaks!
