Junior defenseman Zach Borsoi scored a tying power-play goal in the first period, but Utica College was outmatched by Grenoble in an eventual 8-1 loss in the Pioneers’ second exhibition game Sunday in France.
Borsoi scored quickly into the man-advantage and Devin Warfield and Luc Boby added assists for Utica College, which is playing a total of four exhibition games during the program’s nine-day trip to Europe. UC, which has made three similar trips overseas in the past, was coming off a win over Briancon in its opening exhibition game Friday.
Grenoble, which plays in France’s top pro division and has an experienced roster, broke open the game by tacking on three more first-period goals and went on to outshoot Utica College 60-32.
Utica College’s three goaltenders each faced 20 shots in playing a period in the crease. Sophomore Patrik Virtanen started and totaled 16 stops while classmate Gianluca Baggetta and senior Henry Dill each followed with 18 saves.
The Pioneers get a day off Monday before taking on Grenoble again Tuesday. Utica College also plays Chamonix on Wednesday in the final game of the trip.
