UTICA — People came to the Stanley Center for the Arts in their finest dresses and tuxedos with red shoes to match during the "Kinky Boots" red carpet gala Tuesday night.

Broadway Theatre League of Utica hosted the event, and the proceeds will go to its new community fund, A Pledge for Purpose, benefiting ACR Health’s "the Q center" in Utica.

The gala started with people walking down a red carpet, getting their professional photos taken and the chance to be interviewed by "Kinky Karl," whose real name is Angelo DiGiorgio.

Danielle Monaski said she decided to attend the red carpet gala for many reasons. She heard it was a "great show," it was "something I’ve never seen before," and "it’s nice to get dressed up," she said.

Those who purchased tickets for the charity gala enjoyed a red carpet walk and a private after party to meet the stars of the show. Broadway Theatre League of Utica Executive Director Derek Clark was overcome with joy at the number of people who showed up for the event.

"It’s heartwarming and mind-blowing," he said. "People need to support the (LGBTQ) youth and allow them to be who they want to be," he said. "Be yourself because everyone else is taken."

Clark also said they will not know the amount of money raised from the charity gala for about 60 days.
