A 23-year-old was shot in the shoulder Saturday night after an acquaintance mistook him for an intruder, state police said.

Police say the victim was returning to a residence on state Route 49 in Vienna at about 9:26 p.m. Saturday to retrieve a cell phone he'd forgotten there earlier. The resident, 42-year-old Arthur Rich, thought the victim was an intruder and fired one shot from a long gun, striking his upper shoulder, police said.

The victim was taken by helicopter to Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse, police said.

State police and Oneida County sheriff's deputies responded at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
