Herkimer County law enforcement released new information about a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon on Otsego Street.

ILION – Herkimer County law enforcement released new information about a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon on Otsego Street.

Village of Ilion police responded to 225 Otsego St. at around 2 p.m. Tuesday following a 911 call involving a possible suicide involving a firearm, with a second gunshot victim in the residence.

Pending final forensic analysis and autopsy results, it’s been determined that 42-year-old Shanley J. Johnson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head inside the second-floor apartment, according to a news release. The bullet traveled through his body and struck 20-year-old Shai A. Johnson in the leg, according to a news release.

Herkimer County District Attorney Jeff Carpenter said Shai Johnson is believed to be Shanley Johnson's daughter. He didn’t know why the father, who lived at 97 Grove Street in Ilion, traveled to his daughter’s home before shooting himself. The 42-year-old’s daughter was in the same room when he shot himself, Carpenter said.

Four other family members were in the home at the time of the shooting – ages 2, 15, 16 and 39 – but Carpenter declined to say whether they also witnessed the incident.

No other shots were fired, other than the single handgun round fired by Shanley Johnson, according to the news release. Carpenter said the origin of the gun Johnson used to kill himself is still unknown.

Shai Johnson was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital by Ilion Ambulance Tuesday, where she was treated for her injury. She was later released.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Representatives from the Herkimer County Child Protective Services Department, Domestic Violence Program and the Herkimer County Child Advocacy Center are assisting the family, according to a press release.
