A penalty kick in the 33rd minute from Colgate senior Ethan Kutler helped lead the men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Loyola Marymount Friday, Aug. 26, in season-opening action at Beyer-Small ’76 Field.
The Raiders were able to get on the board in the 33rd minute as an LMU foul in the box led to a Kutler penalty kick that the forward was able to rifle into the lower left-hand corner of the net to put Colgate ahead 1-0.
Colgate earned its second shutout in as many games Sunday afternoon as the Raiders picked up a home 2-0 victory over visiting UMass.
Kutler scored his second game-winning goal of the young season to break a scoreless draw in the 64th minute, while first-year Kentaro Morrison added an insurance tally just over a minute later.
Keeper Ricky Brown recorded his second clean sheet of the season, moving him into a tie for seventh in program history in career shutouts (11).
The Raiders will face their first road test of the season tonight (Sept. 1) at sixth-ranked Syracuse. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from SU Soccer Stadium.
